Font Setup

Before using the Penless software, you need to make sure that appropriate font is set up.

1. For traditional character users, the following steps should be taken:

(1) Go to “View” menu, and click “Set Font”:

(2) In the “Font” window, set “MingLiU” for “Font”, and CHINESE_BIG5” for “Script”.  Then set “Font Style” and “Size” as you prefer:

(3) Repeat the same steps for “Set Printer Font” and “Set InputPanel Font”.  The settings will be automatically saved so you do not need to do it again.

2. For simplified character users, follow the same procedure, but set “SimSun” for “Font” and “CHINESE_GB2312” for “Script”.

Simplified Characters

The default library file in the Penless software is prepared in traditional characters using Big5 code.  The following steps should be taken if you wish to use simplified characters:

1. Go to “Control” menu and click “Chinese Lib”:

2. Use “Browse” to select “defaultgb.lib” in the “Lib” folder (path: C:\Program Files\Penless\Lib) and click “OK” to close.  The settings will be automatically saved so you do not need to do it again:

Input Modes

There are three different input modes in the Penless Software: “Chinese Input”, “Dictionary”, and “English Input”, all accessible in the “Control” menu.  There is, however, a short-cut to the left of the Input Panel, where you can click to switch between the three input modes:

In the Chinese Input mode, a “>” to the right of the Input Panel indicates that there are more characters for the sound.  Click the “>” to display the additional characters:

In the Dictionary mode, click at the right end of the Input Panel and press “->” key to see more items:

Chinese Character Display

For users of Windows 2000 and Windows NT, there are two ways to allow Chinese character display without using an additional Chinese language viewer:

1.      Windows Update (recommended method):

(1) Go to “Start” and click “Windows Update”:

(2) Click “Product Updates” to download the files for Chinese Language Support:

2.      Regional Options:

(1) Go to “Control Panel” and click “Regional Options”:

(2) Click the “General” tag, select “Simplified Chinese” and/or “Traditional Chinese” under the “Language Settings for the System” and click “Apply”.  Then select “Chinese (PRC)” if you wish to use simplified characters, or select “Chinese (Taiwan)” if you wish to use traditional characters:

For users of Windows ME, Windows 98, and Windows 95, an additional Chinese language viewer is needed for Chinese language display.  There are several Chinese language viewer programs available for free download on the Internet, such as NJWIN Internet Viewer (http://www.njstar.com/) and RichWin for Internet (http://richwin.sina.com.cn/download/).

Pronunciation

1. The Penless software by default will pronounce every character as you enter it.  You, however, can choose to turn off the pronunciation function by clicking the “No Pronunciation” button:

2. If you highlight the entire text or any portion of it and click the “Pronunciation” button, the Penless software will continuously pronounce every character one after another:

Complete Pinyin Input

The Penless software requires complete Pinyin input, including the tone mark, for each sound.  Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 0 are used to represent the first, the second, the third, the fourth and the neutral tone, respectively.  For example, “sān” is inputted as “san1”, and “de” is inputted as “de0”:

Input of “ü”

As a rule, “ü” is inputted on the keyboard as “yu”.  For example, “lǜ” is inputted as “lyu4”):
